GREENVILLE, N.C. - UAB completed the season sweep of East Carolina Friday night, winning a Conference USA match 3-0 at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates are now 2-25 overall and 0-18 in league play with just two matches remaining while the Blazers improve to 22-8 and 12-6.
Senior Amanda Lutzow paced ECU offensive and defensively, tallying team-best totals of seven kills and nine digs. A balanced attack for UAB resulted in 11 kills for Kate Morrell and Heather Thomas led the back row with 11 digs.
The Blazers hit .301 for the match while limiting the Pirates to a .120 clip. UAB also held the upper hand in digs (39-31), service aces (6-3) and total blocks (6.0-3.0).
A Kasey Kavanaugh kill made the score 9-7 in favor of the Blazers but UAB raced ahead, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 21-10 advantage. Each team captured four rallies the rest of the way as the Blazers rolled to the 25-14 set win.
The Blazers crept in front 13-10 in the second frame when Lutzow committed an attack error, but East Carolina scored two consecutive points to force a timeout from the visitor bench. A Thais Soares service miscue would knot the set at 17 apiece but a 6-2 run gave UAB a 23-19 lead it would not relinquish. The Pirates fought off a pair of set points before Ashley Ricks ended the interval with a kill.
A 7-1 run by the Blazers to start the third set would be too much for ECU to overcome. UAB took advantages of 17-8 and 23-16 on the way to a 25-17 match-clinching victory.
The Pirates will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, hosting Memphis in a C-USA contest. First serve at Minges Coliseum is set for 1 p.m.
