GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team will host two tournaments at Minges Coliseum for the first time since 2008 as part of its 2012 schedule, released Friday in its entirety by school officials. The slate also features 13 home matches and the return of the Conference USA Tournament which was last held in 2009.
For the second consecutive campaign, ECU opens the year in Greenville, hosting Bethune-Cookman, Campbell and Charlotte Aug. 24-25 in the East Carolina Classic. The Pirates then travel north to Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Invitational where they will meet Bradley, Southeast Missouri and UW-Milwaukee.
The squad will compete closer to home the following weekend, heading to Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham for the Duke Invitational - featuring Northeastern, Elon and the host Blue Devils. ECU then closes nonconference play at home, hosting the three-day East Carolina Invitational (Sept. 13-15). The Pirates open the event against conference rival Marshall Thursday before facing UMBC Friday and Coastal Carolina Saturday.
Defending league champion and 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Tulsa is one of ECU's opponents during the opening weekend of conference play. The Pirates take on the Golden Hurricane Sept. 23 after facing off against SMU in Dallas two days prior.
Other road contests during the league gauntlet include battles at Rice, Marshall, Southern Miss, UCF, UAB and Memphis while East Carolina hosts Houston, Tulane, UTEP and the other five squads in the East division.
The 2012 Conference USA Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. The winner of the event receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
