GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team will hit the court for their first organized action of the 2013 season on Friday, August 23 in the Purple and Gold Scrimmage at 7 p.m. at Minges Coliseum.
The scrimmage will allow Pirate Nation to get a first glimpse of the 2013 ECU volleyball team and first year head coach Julie Torbett. The contest will be free of charge and fans who attend will be able to pick up a volleyball schedule poster.
ECU returns All-State Second Team honoree Nicole Willis who led the Pirates in 2012 as a junior with 323 kills (3.76 per set), 370 points (4.30 per set), and tied for the team lead with 22 service aces (0.26 per set). Willis also posted 228 digs (2.65 per set), 33 total blocks (0.51 per set), and 13 assists (0.15 per set). Willis will be joined on the court by senior defensive specialist/libero Shelby Beasley who set the standard for ECU with 430 digs to average 4.34 per set. Beasley tied with Willis for the most service aces (22) in a season and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the East Carolina Classic as well as the ECU Pirate Invitational.
In addition to returning 10 letterwinners and five starters, the Pirates have welcomed four newcomers in Bella Borgiotti, Dayna Kramer, Ashley McRae, and Halee Wright. The four incoming freshman will round out a squad that is looking to turn things around after a 2012 season in which ECU posted a 2-25 overall record and finished 1-15 in Conference USA action.
The Pirates will kick off the 2013 season on the road at the Wake Forest Deacon Invitational Friday, August 30 against host Wake Forest at 6:30 p.m. ECU will then take on UNC Greensboro and East Tennessee State Saturday, August 31 at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
