ECU Volleyball Opens With Win on Day One of Pirate Invitational
08/29/2003 GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore outside hitter Erica Wilson put down a team-high nine
kills while freshman Jaime Bevan and sophomore Pam Ferris each added eight kills as
the East Carolina volleyball team knocked off UNC Greensboro, 30-16, 30-22 and
30-13, Friday night.
ECU (1-0) picked up its first win of the season in the opening round of the City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Lipscomb (1-0) defeated Radford (0-1) in five games, 30-18, 29-31, 33-31, 29-31 and 15-12, in the first game of the tournament. Kim Dayton led UNC Greensboro with a match-high 10 kils. Lajean Morrow had eight kills and six digs for the Spartans. ECU junior setter Jessica Vick added 18 assists while Johanna Bertini recorded 10 digs on defense. The Pirates outblocked the Spartans, 11-1, in the match led by Bevan's six blocks. ECU opened game one with a 9-3 run behind Bevan's two kills and a service ace by Wilson. The Pirates went on a 17-9 run to take a 26-12 lead. Alexis Jones and Katie Jannusch each had two kills during the run. A kill and a solo block by Bevan capped off the win for the Pirates in game one. The Spartans built a 7-3 lead early in game two behind three straight kills by Hilary Overby. The Pirates made an 11-3 run taking their first lead of the game, 18-11. Jannusch recorded two service aces during the strech. ECU extended its lead to 27-17, but the Spartans pulled within 29-22 behind Kim Dayton's service ace and a Lajean Morrow kill. Ferris ended the game with a kill off a Vick assist. In game three, ECU jumped out to a 14-7 advantage, before outscoring the Spartans 16-6 to complete the three-game sweep. ECU hit .314 in the match.
Lipscomb def. Radford, 30-18, 29-31, 33-31, 29-31, 15-12 Radford out-hit Lipscomb .188-.148 in the match. Lipscomb built an 18-9 lead in game one. Peck put down three kills for Lipscomb. The Lady Bisons went ahead 21-12 after a bad set by Mulligan. Lipscomb then outscored the Highlanders, 9-6, to pick up the 30-18 win. Radford used two kills and two service aces by Kate McHugh to rally from a 15-10 deficit and defeat Lipscomb in game two. After Lipscomb held off the Highlanders in game three, 33-31. Radford forced game five when a kill by Gates and an attacking error by Lipscomb's Lindsey Rutherford broke a 29-29 tie. The Lady Bisons rallied from an 8-7 disadvantage to take game five. Back-to-back kills by Lanius ended the match giving LIpscomb its first win of the season. The City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational continues Saturday. ECU plays Lipscomb at 10 a.m. and Radford at 7 p.m. UNC Greensboro plays Radford at 12 p.m. and Lipscomb at 5 p.m.
