Lady Pirates Split on Day Two of Tournament

  • ROCK HILL, S.C. - Junior libero Johanna Bertini tallied a career-high 22 digs to lead East Carolina to the win over UNC Greensboro in three games, 30-19, 30-24, 30-13, in ECU's second macth of the Winthrop Captures Hilton Garden Invitational Saturday morning. Belmont defeated ECU in three games in the evening match, 30-22, 30-28, 30-23, giving the Lady Pirates a split on the day.

    Bertini finished the tournament with 42 digs in three matches and was named to the all-tournament team. She averaged 14 digs per match. Freshman Kelley Wernert tied her career-high with 10 kills in ECU's win over UNC Greensboro. Erica Wilson had nine kills while Paige Howell and Pam Ferris each chipped in eight kills. Heidi Krug recorded 35 set assists against the Lady Spartans. Lauren Keiser led UNCG with nine kills. ECU out-hit the Lady Spartans .248-.101 in the match. The Lady Pirates had 10 team blocks against UNCG.

    Belmont defeated ECU, 30-22, 30-28, 30-23
    Belmont's Lindsay Cleveland put down 11 kills and the Lady Bruins out-hit ECU, .281-.057, as Belmont defeated East Carolina in the final match for both teams at the Winthrop Invitational. Sophomore middle blocker Jaime Bevan had 11 kills for ECU (5-4). Wernert had seven kills for ECU.

    East Carolina returns to action Tuesday evening when the Lady Pirates travel to NC State for a nonconference match.
