09/14/2003 LYNCHBURG, Va. - Elon's Emily Hayes put down a match-high 17 kills to lead four Phoenix players in double figures as Elon held off the East Carolina volleyball team in five games, 25-30, 23-30, 31-29, 30-17 and 13-15 Saturday evening in the ninth match of the Liberty Holiday Inn Select Invitational. The Pirates (6-6) fell to Liberty in four games earlier in the day, 23-30, 30-27, 10-30 and 25-30.
Sophomore libero Johanna Bertini led ECU with 16 digs in the match.Katie Jannusch and Pam Ferris each had 12 kills while Alexis Jones chipped in 10 kills. Junior setter Jessica Vick had 51 assists in the match. Freshman middle blocker Jaime Bevan recorded seven blocks and added nine kills for the Pirates. ECU rallied from a two game deficit to take game three 31-29. The Pirates out-hit the Phoenix, .324-.051 in game four to force game five, but Elon overcame an early deficit and hit .471 to take the match in five games. Maria Labruto had 16 kills for Elon. Ashley Ruckert and Kristi Tunila both had 10 kills for the Phoenix. Liberty defeats East Carolina, 23-30, 30-27, 10-30, 25-30 Liberty's Becky Rudnick had a match-high 18 kills to lead four Liberty players in double figures as the Flames knock off ECU in four games. Jennifer Belk had 15 kills and digs for the Flames. Katie Jannusch recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs for the Pirates. Pam Ferris added 11 kills. Junior setter Jessica Vick added a double-double with 43 set assists and 13 digs. Johanna Bertini had 10 digs for the Pirates.ECU out-dug Liberty, 47-43, but the Flames out-block ECU, 10-3.
