Lady Pirates' Fight at NC State Falls Short, 3-1

  • RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior outside hitter Pam Ferris tied a career-high with a match-high 19 kills, but NC State out-blocked East Carolina, 15-6, on its way to the victory in four games, 30-23, 30-27, 25-30, 30-24, Tuesday night at Reynolds Coliseum in front of 1,123. Junior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko led the Wolfpack with 18 kills and six blocks.

    Sophomore middle blocker Jaime Bevan finished with 14 kills while freshman Kelley Wernert had a career-high 13 kills. Erica Wilson added 12 kills for the Lady Pirates who only hit .156 in the match. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug tallied a double-double with 10 digs and 55 set assists. Junior libero Johanna Bertini had 13 digs.

    East Carolina overcame a two game deficit to force a game four after winning game three, 30-25. Wilson and Ferris each contributed six kills in game three. ECU used a 9-4 run to break an 11-11 tie and goa ahead, 20-15. The Lady Pirates stretched their lead to 24-16 kills from Wilson and two service aces from freshman Mignon Dubenion. NC State drew within 28-24, but Ferris and Wilson each had kills to force the extra game.

    NC State overcame a 22-18 deficit in game four to take the match. Stefani Eddins had three kills during a 12-2 Wolfpack run to seal the win. Eddins and Emily Bertrand combined for a block for the final point of the match.

    NC State took game one 30-23 after hitting .273. Kosoko had five kills to lead the Wolfpack while Ferris led the Lady Pirates with six kills. The Wolfpack broke an 8-8 tie with a 7-2 run to distance themselves.

    ECU only .146 in game two while the Wolfpack hit .300 as NC State won the second game of the match, 30-27. The Lady Pirates fought back from a 19-12 deficit to come within 24-21. Bevan recorded five kills down the stretch. ECU got within 28-26 on a kill from Dubenion, but Kosoko ended the game with a kill giving NC State the 30-27 win.

    Melanie Rowe added 13 kills and 11 digs for NC State. Bertrand also finished with a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Setter Lauren Markowski ran the offense with 48 assists. She also added 18 digs.

    ECU returns to action this weekend when the Lady Pirates travel to Charleston, S.C. to take part in the College of Charleston Tournament. ECU will face College of Charleston, Duke and Georgia State.
