Volleyball Wins Opener at CCU Tournament

  • CONWAY, S.C. - Sophomore outside hitter Pam Ferris put down 14 kills and sophomore libero Johanna Bertini tallied 14 digs to lead the East Carolina Volleyball team past Bethune-Cookman in three straight games, 30-20, 30-19 and 30-19 in the opening match of the Coastal Carolina Tournament Friday afternoon. ECU ran its record to 8-6 while Bethune-Cookman fell to 3-7 on the season.

    Junior Sarah Vick, playing the first time at middle blocker, recorded 11 kills for the Pirates. ECU out-hit Bethune Cookman, .294-.122 and out-dug the Lady Wildcats, 45-34. Freshman Jaime Bevan chipped in nine kills and Katie Jannusch added six kills for the Pirates. ECU recorded 10 service aces in the match.

    The Pirates out-hit the Lady Wildcats .212-.038 to take game one, 30-20. ECU only committed three attack errors in game two and hit .333 in the 30-19 win. The Pirates had 18 team kills in game three and out-hit Bethune Cookman .324-.100 in the final game of the match.

    Melissa Sanders led Bethune Cookman with 10 kills. The Lady Wildcats posted five blocks in the match. ECU junior setter Jessica Vick added 21 set assists and freshman Heidi Krug added 14 assists for the Pirates.

    ECU continues play in the Coastal Carolina Tournament Saturday. The Pirates play the host team Coastal Carolina at 11:30 a.m. before finishing up the tournament with Eastern Michigan at 4:30 p.m..
