Pirate Volleyball Travels to Tulsa for Sunday Matinée

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball team will travel to the Sooner State to take on Tulsa at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. (ET).
The Pirates are coming off of an 0-3 (17-25, 22-25, 13-25) loss to Conference USA foe SMU at Moody Coliseum Friday night and are looking for their first conference win of the season. At SMU, junior Nicole Willis was the only Pirate to reach double-figure kills in the setback. Her 10 kills marked the fourth straight match in which she notched double-figure kills. She also recorded eight digs, a pair of assists and a block. Senior Kelly Derby notched five kills on 13 attempts without committing an error for a .385 attack percentage. The middle hitter added six digs and two block assists in the contest. Junior Shelby Beasley led the squad with 12 digs in the back row. She also tallied a pair of assists. Junior Kasey Kavanaugh and sophomore Zarah Cecich each contributed nine assists at setter.
East Carolina and Tulsa will meet for the 10th time in program history and the Golden Hurricane leads the all-time series with a record of 8-1. The only time the Pirates collected a victory was in 2005 when ECU held off Tulsa in four sets in Greenville, N.C.
This season, ECU has been led by junior libero Shelby Beasley, junior Nicole Willis, and senior Kelly Derby. Beasley is coming off a weekend in which she was the lone Pirate named to the All-Tournament Team at the Pirate Invitational where she posted a team-leading 54 digs (4.15 digs per set). On the season, Beasley has accumulated 177 digs (3.77 digs per set), 14 assists, and 11 service aces. Willis has been on the offensive attack as she leads the squad with 130 kills (3.82 kills per set) and has added 101 digs, 17 total blocks, and 10 aces. Derby has been a solid presence for the Pirates this season as the senior middle hitter has amassed 65 total blocks to lead Conference USA in blocks per set (1.38). She has also posted 78 kills, 22 digs, six assists, and five service aces.
