Tribe Rallies By Volleyball, 3-1
09/24/2004 GREENVILLE, N.C. --William & Mary's Sarah Long tallied a match-high 18 kills to lead three players in double figures and the Tribe out-hit East Carolina, .253-.171, as William & Mary (8-4) defeated ECU in four games, 28-30, 30-18, 30-28, 30-24, Friday night in a nonconference volleyball match at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum. Junior libero Johanna Bertini tied her career-high with 22 digs to lead ECU's defense.
Erica Wilson and Paige Howell each recorded 14 kills for the Lady Pirates (6-8). Howell hit .591 in the match. Mandy Mayo added 15 kills while Caitlin Geraghty chipped in 11 kills for William & Mary. W&M libero Erin Simmons tallied 22 digs for the Tribe. East Carolina overcame a 23-16 deficit to take game one, 30-28. The Lady Pirates tied the game 28-28, behind three kills from Wilson and four kills from Pam Ferris. Howell and Kelley Wernert ended the game with a block giving ECU a one-game lead. William & Mary hit .364 in game two to even up the match. The Tribe broke a 3-3 tie with a 17-6 run to take a 20-9 lead. ECU pulled within 22-16, but the Tribe ended the game on an 8-2 run. The Lady Pirates led game three 19-16 before the Tribe came back to tie the game, 20-20. ECU led 24-21, but Mayo put down three kills during a 9-4 run to end the game for the Tribe. ECU managed to only hit .051 in game four as William & Mary hit .189 to take the game and the match. Mignon Dubenion and Wernert each had nine kills for the Lady Pirates. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug finished with 52 assists. W&M setter Amy Owens ran the Tribe offense finishing with a double-double with 46 assists and 14 digs. East Carolina returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Pirates host Campbell at 7 p.m.
