Pirate Volleyball Hosts Southern Miss on Family Weekend

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Pirate volleyball team looks to earn its first conference victory this weekend when it plays host to Southern Miss and UCF, Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday’s match up with the Golden Eagles is set for 7 p.m. in Minges Coliseum.
East Carolina welcomes Southern Miss to Greenville, N.C., for a conference match on Family Weekend. The Pirates are coming off a weekend in which they went 0-3 at SMU and fell in straight sets to Tulsa. ECU (1-13, 0-3 C-USA) and Southern Miss (5-9, 1-1 C-USA) will square off for the 20th time in program history, and the Golden Eagles lead the all-time series with a record of 12-7.The last time the two teams met, Southern Miss swept East Carolina at Minges Coliseum.
Junior Shelby Beasley is the Pirates team-leader defensively with 195 digs and her 3.90 digs per set average is good for fifth in Conference USA. Junior Nicole Willis owns a team-best 138 kills (3.73 kills per set), 110 digs (2.97 digs per set), 17 total blocks (0.46 blocks per set), 10 service aces (0.27 aces per set) and 157.0 total points on the year. She is ranked fifth in the conference in kills per set and ninth in service aces per set. Senior Kelly Derby has taken care of the net this season with 65 total blocks to average 1.30 blocks per set, which ranks her second in the conference. At setter, sophomore Zarah Cecich and junior Kasey Kavanaugh have been pacing the squad with 286 and 128 assists, respectively. Kavanaugh is just 20 assists away from breaking into the Pirates Top-10 career list.
