GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball team welcomes Conference USA foe UCF to Minges Coliseum for a mid-day affair Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. on Parent’s Day.

Despite winning the first set Sunday, East Carolina could not sustain the momentum as the Pirates dropped a four-set decision to the Knights at the Venue at UCF.

The Pirates are coming off a tough five-set conference loss against Southern Miss on Friday night. Despite dropping the contest, junior Shelby Beasley provided a positive in the match as the defensive specialist set a new single-game record with 34 digs in the setback. Beasley has played exceptionally well this season and was named to a trio of all-tournament teams in addition to leading the club with 229 digs to average 4.16 digs per set.

East Carolina and UCF will meet for the 16th time in program history and the Pirates are looking to stay on top as they hold an 8-7 advantage in the overall series. The last time the conference rivals met, the Knights defeated the Pirates, 3-1, in Orlando, Fla. The last time ECU was victorious over UCF was on Sept. 25, 2009, when the Pirates held of the Knights, 3-1, in Greenville, N.C.

In addition to Beasley, ECU is led by junior Nicole Willis who is the team-leader in kills with 153 to average 3.64 kills per set. Willis has also contributed 122 digs (2.90 digs per set) and 20 total blocks. Junior Virginia Fitch has been on a tear as of late. The middle hitter is coming off a match in which she posted a career-best nine total blocks. Fitch has accumulated 39 blocks on the season thus far. Senior Kelly Derby leads the squad with 67 blocks and has tallied 96 kills and 23 digs. Junior Kasey Kavanaugh has totaled 144 assists on the season and is just four shy of breaking into the ECU top-10 career list. Sophomore Zarah Cecich has been splitting time with Kavanaugh at setter, and currently leads the Pirates with 314 assists and averages 6.68 assists per set.
