Pirates Fall in Straight Sets to UAB

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Hannah Allgood turned in another solid performance Sunday afternoon, but the East Carolina volleyball team was unable to overcome a .008 hitting percentage and dropped a 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 13-25) contest to Conference foe UAB at Minges Coliseum.
Allgood registered seven kills, 11 digs and two assists in a balanced effort for the Pirates, while Nicole Willis led the squad with eight kills, seven digs, and a pair of block assists. Shelby Beasley set the tone for the ECU defense as she chipped in 13 digs, while Erika Figueroa added seven digs of her own. Zarah Cecich notched 19 assists and hit a team-best .500 after knocking down three kills on six attempts without committing an error.
East Carolina (1-20, 0-10 C-USA) turned in its best performance of the day during set two, when the Pirates pounded out 12 kills and had a 51-percent sideout margin.
In the match, UAB (15-11, 7-3 C-USA) finished with a .306 hitting percentage and 40 total kills. The Blazers recorded 10.0 total team blocks and tallied 56 digs in the decision.
The first set began as a back-and-forth affair, but the Blazers quickly broke a 5-5 tie and surged ahead. UAB took advantage of back-to-back Pirate errors and used a balanced offense to secure a 25-14 win.
The Pirates stayed close on the heels of the Blazers in the second set and remained within striking distance. However, UAB held onto the lead it established early in the set and defeated ECU, 25-19.
Throughout set three, the Pirates battled and tried to pull closer to the Blazers, however, UAB extended its win-streak to eight matches win a 25-13 win over East Carolina to take the set and match.
UAB had a pair of Blazers record double-figure kills in Sam Skinner (12) and Sam Serley (10). Libero Rachel Fairbanks led the Blazers defensively with 18 digs, while Becca Howard added 10. Alison Woods and Howard each saw action at setter as Woods finished the match with 19 assists and Howard recorded 16 for a double-double.
ECU will travel to Orlando, Fla., for a conference match at UCF on Friday, Oct. 26. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
