Pirates Drop 3-2 Heartbreaker to Southern Miss
East Carolina out-hit Southern Miss .207 to .189 and Nicole Willis recorded a double-double, but the Pirates were unable to pull out a win as they dropped a tough 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 10-15) decision to the Golden Eagles Friday night.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball team will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss at the Reed Green Coliseum on Sunday, October 28, at 2 p.m.

The Pirates are coming off of a disappointing 0-3 (7-25, 12-25, 20-25) loss to Conference foe UCF at The Venue at UCF on Friday night and are looking for their first conference win of the season. At UCF, junior Nicole Willis registered a team-high nine kills and added seven digs with a block assist, while libero Shelby Beasley tallied a team-best 15 digs on the evening. Zarah Cecich posted 17 assists, three kills, one dig and hit .400 in the contest. Senior Kelly Derby finished the match with four kills, two aces, a pair of digs and two block assists, while junior Hannah Allgood concluded the match with eight digs, a pair of block assists, and a kill.

East Carolina and Southern Miss will meet for the 21st time in program history and the Golden Eagles hold the advantage in the all-time series, 13-7. Earlier this season, Southern Miss came from behind to edge ECU, 3-2, on September 28, and the Pirates are looking to even the score.

This season the Pirates have been led by Willis who is the team’s offensive leader with 235 kills to average 3.56 kills per set. In addition, she has also tallied 186 digs (2.82 digs per set) which is good for third on the squad. Willis has accumulated 33 total blocks, 14 aces, and 11 assists on the year. Beasley has set the pace for the Pirate defense all season and has posted a team-best 338 digs to average 4.28 digs per set. Cecich, a sophomore from Crown Point, Ind., has emerged as the ECU setter late in the season and has totaled 488 assists and has a 7.07 assists per set ratio. She has totaled 59 digs, 32 kills, 16 total blocks, and 10 service aces on the year.



ECU is 1-21 overall and 0-11 in Conference USA action. The Pirates are looking to get on the winning track and snap a 20-match losing streak which dates back to August. 25.
