ECU Heads South to Take on UAB

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Pirate volleyball team will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a Friday evening conference match up with UAB at Bartow Arena. The match is slated for an 8 p.m. (ET) start.

East Carolina will enter the match with a 1-22 record and an 0-12 conference mark after the Pirates were swept last week at UCF, followed by a close 3-2 loss at Southern Miss. Against the Golden Eagles, Nicole Willis set a new single-game record after she pounded out 32 kills in the contest. The junior outside hitter also contributed 15 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the year. Shelby Beasley found her way into the ECU single-game annals as well, after recording a 29-dig performance which tied her for third in the East Carolina record book. Virginia Fitch notched a season-high 10 kills and hit .273 with a total of six blocks in the decision. Whitney Campbell registered her first double-digit kill performance of the season with 10 kills, six digs, and a pair of block assists. Zarah Cecich tallied 55 assists, six digs, three blocks, and a kill, while Kelly Derby finished the match with eight kills, six total blocks, three digs and a .222 clip.
The two squads will face each other for the 21st time in program history. UAB currently leads the all-time series with a 15-5 record. Earlier this season, the Blazers swept the Pirates at Minges Coliseum on October 21. The Pirates have not defeated the Blazers since 2006 when East Carolina took a four-set match over UAB in Greenville.
Willis has been the team’s offensive leader all season and owns 267 kills on the year. She is averaging 3.76 kills per set which ranks her sixth in Conference USA. The Raleigh, N.C., native has also added 201 digs, 35 total blocks, 16 service aces, and 11 assists with 302.0 points for the Pirates. Defensively, Beasley has set the tone for ECU and has amassed 367 digs for a 4.37 average which is good for fifth in the conference. At setter, Cecich leads the way with 543 assists and her 7.34 assists per set rank her 10th in the league. Derby has accumulated 84 total blocks (17 solo, 67 assists) to average 1.00 blocks per set which is tied for sixth in C-USA.
ECU is looking earn its first conference win of the season and snap a 21-match losing streak which dates back to August 25.
