East Carolina Volleyball Falls To North Carolina A&T
11/05/2002

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina University women's volleyball team (6-22, 0-9 C-USA) was defeated by North Carolina A&T State (18-13, 7-3 MEAC) tonight by a score of 3-1 at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The match was played in front of a crowd of 137.

The Pirates and the Aggies swapped leads on and off throughout much of game one. With the game tied 16-16, the Aggies earned their final lead of the game on a service error by ECU's Jennifer Galimore. The one point advantage was enough to motivate the North Carolina A&T women, and they went ahead by five before East Carolina would score another point. ECU would score on a kill by Pam Ferris and then score the next four points to being the game within one. The Pirates would keep the game within two points until the end, but would not have enough power to rally back for the win, and the Aggies took game one by a score of 30-28.

Game two opened up with a point for ECU on a service ace by Sarah Vick, and again the Pirates and Aggies would swap leads throughout the majority of the game. With the score even at 10, the Aggies went up on a kill by Tuamafa Reilly. N.C. A&T would take a five point lead soon after, but the Pirates held on to once again bring the game within one. With the game at 21-20, the Aggies would go on a seven to four scoring run, and win the game 30-24. East Carolina would go up early in game three and yield the lead to A&T on two occasions. Tied at 14, the Aggies got their first lead of the game on an attack error by ECU's Shannon Paton. Later, at 18 all, North Carolina A&T would take the point advantage on an attack error by Vick. Moments after, with the score even at 23, Denise Hartnett came in to serve for the Pirates, and rallied the team to a 28-23 lead. On her final serve, N.C. A&T's Judith Ball earned a kill to stop the Pirate run. East Carolina would hold on to earn the win, gaining its final point on a kill by Paton.

North Carolina A&T went up early in game four, and took a six point lead midway through the game. The Aggies would hold on to their lead, and pull out the 30-21 win to clinch the match, handing East Carolina its third straight loss. Paton finished the game with 13 kills for the Pirates, while Vick and Ferris followed close behind with 10 each. Hartnett had 12 digs defensively, and Vick and Johanna Bertini each had 11. Erica Wilson was the only setter playing for the Pirates tonight. She finished the game with 40 assists, and two service aces.

The Pirates will hit the road this weekend when they travel to Saint Louis and Memphis for two Conference USA matches. ECU will face the Billikens on Friday, November 8, and the Tigers on Saturday, November 9. Both games are slated for an 8 p.m. Eastern start.
