Memphis Defeats Volleyball, 3-0

  • GREENVILLE, N.C. - Memphis' Tiara Gilkey scored a match-high 25.5 points including 22 kills, two service aces, one block and one block assist and the Lady Tigers hit .302 as Memphis defeated East Carolina in three games, 32-30, 37-35 and 30-21 in Conference USA volleyball action Friday night at Williams Arena. ECU fell to 10-18 and 1-9 in C-USA while the Lady Tigers improved to 26-4 and 7-3 in conference.

    Sophomore outside hitter Erica Wilson posted a team-high 13 kills while freshman middle blocker Jaime Bevan added nine kills and seven blocks for East Carolina. Brittany Barnett posted a double-double for Memphis putting down 15 kills and recording 10 digs. Heather Watts added 55 set assists for the Lady Tigers.

    ECU out-blocked Memphis 12-8 behind Bevan's seven total blocks and Alexis Jone's five blocks. Wilson added five block assists in the match, but the Lady Pirates only hit .210 as a team.

    Gilkey posted six kills in game one to help the Lady Tigers rally from a deficit. ECU opened game one on a 9-3 run behind two kills from Pam Ferris. Memphis pulled within 11-7 before two Tiger hitting errors extended ECU's lead to 13-7. Barnett started a 5-0 run with two kills as Memphis got within 13-12. ECU led 15-13 before Gilkey added a kill and a service ace to start a 3-0 run giving Memphis a 16-15 advantage. The Lady Pirates regained the lead 22-18 behind Katie Jannusch's service ace and kill but Memphis scored four consecutive points to pull within 23-22. ECU led 26-22 and 27-24, but the Lady Tigers rallied to tie the game, 29-29. Watts and Barnett both recorded one kill down the stretch and a hitting error by ECU gave Memphis game one.

    East Carolina jumped out to an 8-4 and 12-6 lead in game two before Memphis went on a 10-4 run to tie game two, 16-16. Gilkey and Watts each put down a kill and Gilkey added an ace during a 7-2 Lady Tiger run as Memphis led 23-18. ECU pulled within 24-23 after two kills from Wilson and two hitting errors from the Lady Tigers. Bevan's kill tied game two, 25-25. Game two then saw 10 ties the last coming at 35-35. Barnett put down the last two points for the Lady Tigers giving Memphis the 37-35 win.

    Memphis then hit .531 in the third and final game to take the match, 30-21.

    Jessica Vick finished with 36 set assists for the Lady Pirates.

    ECU wraps up its home schedule Saturday night when the Lady Pirates host Saint Louis for Senior Day at 7 p.m. Memphis heads to Charlotte for a C-USA match Saturday night.
