Saint Louis Tops Volleyball, 3-1
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Saint Louis' Kayla Kmitta and Alexis Cooley combined for 38 kills and the Billikens out-blocked East Carolina, 16-4, as Saint Louis ruined Senior Day for ECU in four games, 30-22, 25-30, 32-30 and 30-16, Saturday night at Williams Arena in Conference USA volleyball action. ECU fell to 10-19 and 1-10 in C-USA while Saint Louis improved to 9-19 and 2-9 in the conference.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Vick posted a career-high 20 kills and added 13 digs for her third double-double of the season for East Carolina. Vick finished with a match-high 24.5 points adding three service aces, one solo block and one block assist. Sophomore outside hitter Erica Wilson posted 12 kills for ECU. ECU's lone senior Alexis Jones finished her final home match with seven kills, two digs and two blocks. ECU's defense was led by Johanna Bertini with 15 digs while Heidi Krug added 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Gallimore came off the bench to provide a spark for the Lady Pirates and finished with three kills and a career-high three service aces and six digs.
Saint Louis put four players in double figures in digs led by Megan Sorich with 15 digs. Jessica Poorbaugh tallied 13 digs while Jessica Kmitta added 12 digs and Lauren Boissevain chipped in 11 digs. Kayla Kmitta and Cooley each led the Billikens with seven blocks. Alyson Merchant had six blocks for Saint Louis.
Saint Louis took game one, 30-22, behind six kills from Kayla Kmitta. The Billikens led 7-2 before ECU rallied to tie the game, 11-11, on a kill by Sarah Vick. Saint Louis used a 13-3 run to take a 24-14 lead that it would not lose on their way to the game one win.
East Carolina battled back from a 19-15 deficit in game two to tie the match, 1-1, with a 30-25 win. Sarah Vick put down five kills to help ECU to the win while Krug recorded seven digs in game two. Trailing 24-21, Vick and Jaime Bevan both had kills and ECU benefited from a couple of Saint Louis errors to tie the game, 25-25. Bevan added two kills while Galimore and Vick each had one kill down the stretch capping off a 7-0 run to end game two.
Saint Louis overcame a 22-14 deficit with an 18-8 run and six blocks to take game three. ECU broke open a one-point lead on seven service points from Galimore. Galimore put down her three aces and Wilson had two kills during the run giving ECU an 18-10 lead. ECU extended its lead to 22-14 before Saint Louis made its run. ECU made four hitting errors and Kayla Kmitta added four kills during the run to tie the game, 25-25. Saint Louis took a 29-26 lead after Kmitta's service ace, but Wilson put down two kills to help ECU tie the game, 29-29. Cooley's kill gave Saint Louis a 31-30 lead. Then ECU committed a hitting error giving the Billikens game three. Saint Louis then hit .355 in game four while ECU only hit .048 to take the final game and the match, 30-16.
Jessica Vick ran ECU's offense finishing with 46 set assists. Erin McClanahan had 48 set assists for Saint Louis. Saint Louis hit .236 for the match while ECU only hit .090.
The Lady Pirates wrap up their regular season next weekend on the road at C-USA foes Houston and TCU. Saint Louis returns home to host Tulane and Southern Miss.
