Position:
Head Coach

Daniel Lee enters his first season as an assistant coach in charge of middle distance and distance runners for the East Carolina University track and field Men's and Women's teams.

Lee comes to ECU after seven years of coaching in the high school ranks. Lee has worked with combined men's and women's programs, at Wake Forest HS and Apex HS in North Carolina, throughout his entire coaching career. During his time at these schools Lee helped rewrite the record books. At Wake Forest HS, 74 of the 80 slots on the All-time Top-10 lists from 800m-3200m and 4x800m relay are filled by athletes coached by Lee. Lee joined the staff at the traditional track powerhouse Apex HS. There he teamed up with North Carolina coaching great Roy Cooper. During his two years at Apex Lee helped add many names to the Apex All-time Top-10 lists including the men's 800m State champion in 2003. Besides his duties coaching at these high schools, Lee also found time to privately coach many other athletes as well. The most heralded of these athletes was Sandy Roberts, a two-time qualifier for the Footlocker Cross-Country National Championship, of Raleigh North Carolina. Though Lee specializes in the middle and long distances, he has also helped coach many other exceptional athletes as well. Lee has coached medalists in 15 of the 18 events at the North Carolina 4A State Championships and State Champions in 11 different events.

Lee joined the Wolf Pack of North Carolina State University as a walk-on athlete in 1992 and later earned a scholarship through hard work and dedication. During his time there he was part of the team that captured the 1996 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, competing in the open 800m as well as the 4x400m relay. During his time at NC State he trained with their vaunted Men's and Women's Cross-Country teams. These Cross-Country teams won a combined 7 ACC team titles during this five year stretch. Before he finished his career at NC State he had dropped nine seconds off of his 800m personal best. His efforts earned him a place in their record books with Top-10 all-time performances in the open 800m (indoor and outdoor) as well as the 4x800m and Distance Medley relays (indoor and outdoor). He also earned Academic All-Conference honors every year he competed.

Lee earned a BS in Science Education from North Carolina State University in 1997 and completed his coursework for a Master of Art in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006. Lee holds USA Track & Field Level I and Level II Coaches Certifications and is a regular speaker at Cross-Country and Track & Field camps/clinics.

The 33 year old Lee is married to the former Rachel Pascha Shugarman, who is a 1998 graduate of UNC-Greensboro with a BFA in Dance. Before her marriage she spent six years performing in plays and musicals around the world and on the famous stages of New York City.
