Overall UNC Wilmington won the men's race and Campbell won the women's division. The top men's finisher in the event was Verrelle Taylor (Campbell), who ran the 5K in 15:31:37. Pacing the women was Charlotte Farquharson (Campbell), who ran the 5K in 19:02:10.

"Both the men and women put in a very solid effort for the first event of the season," said head coach Curt Kraft. "We had four women place in the top-10 and three of them were freshman. It really shows that we are going to have a bright future. As for the men's side, Stephen Tausend ran very well and they are coming along as well. We have a lot of injuries on the men's team and I can sense that they are going to continue to improve every week."
The men's and women's cross country team will be back in action Sept. 16 for the Coastal Carolina Invite. The men will be running the 8K, while the women will compete in the 5K. The first meet for the Pirates at home will Sept. 30 for the McAlister's Deli Invite at Lake Kristi.
