
Four Pirates Selected In MLB Draft

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Stephen Batts, Devin Harris, Chris Heston and Ryan Wood each heard their names called Wednesday afternoon as they were selected on the second day of the 2009 Major League First Year Player Draft.
Harris, a native of Gastonia, N.C., was the first Pirate to be selected when the Baltimore Orioles chose him with the 236th overall pick in the eighth round. Senior Ryan Wood was taken by the Kansas City Royals as a pitcher in the 11th round (pick No. 332) just before junior right-hander Chris Heston heard his name called in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants (pick No. 357). Stephen Batts was the last member of the 2009 Conference USA Champions to be called on day two when the Philadelphia Phillies took him with the 587th overall pick as a first baseman in round 19.
Also selected in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft were ECU signees Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels, Round 1, Pick No. 25 overall), Nick McBride (Texas Rangers, Round 5, Pick No. 154 overall), Walker Gourley (Pittsburgh Pirates, Round 13, Pick No. 385 overall) and John Wooten (San Diego Padres, Round 20, Pick No. 594 overall).
The 2009 MBL Draft will continue Thursday morning starting at 11:30 a.m. (EDT) with round 31 and will continue until all 50 rounds are completed.
